As the new year takes off, Bloomberg has placed two Nigerian billionaires on their “top 500” index. The chart details the 500 richest people in the world, from a diverse background of business and investment.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the world’s richest people.

Unsurprisingly, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos begins the year as the wealthiest person on the planet. His personal fortune of $125 billion is comfortably higher than the worth of his nearest competitor, Bill Gates: The Microsoft founder has just over $90 billion to his name.

1. Jeff Bezos – $125 billion (technology).
2. Bill Gates – $90.4 billion (technology).
3. Warren Buffett – $83.8 billion (multiple investments).
4. Bernard Arnault – $68.6 billion (consumer goods).
5. Amancio Ortega – $58.6 billion (retail).

7. Mark Zuckerberg – $52.0 billion (technology).

Aliko Dangote was ranked the richest African/Nigerian on the planet. He is the 119th richest man in the world.

Then we’ve got Mike Adenuga sitting in 499 place thanks to his diverse portfolio of investments and business ventures.

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, is the founder and chairman of Dangote Cement, the continent’s largest cement producer.
Dangote Cement produces 44 million metric tons annually and plans to increase its output 33% by 2020.
Dangote also owns stakes in publicly-traded salt, sugar and flour manufacturing companies.
