With Internet penetration expanding steadily across Africa, video streaming platforms, such as YouTube etc, are becoming an increasingly important medium for sharing, enjoying and appreciating African music.
Below are the top 10 latest most watched African music videos on YouTube.

12. Davido – If

Over 97 Million views

With a record view of over 97 million, IF by Davido can be said to be one of his best songs so far. This song was so hot R-kelly just couldn’t resist jumping on it.

11. P-square – Personally (Nigeria)

Over 95 million views

With a record 95 million views and counting, “ Personally ,” the 2014 hit song by the now defunct music duo of Nigerian celebrity twins Peter and Paul Okoye is the 11th most watched African music video on YouTube.

P-Square used to be a Nigerian R&B duo of identical twin brothers Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye. They produced and released their albums through Square Records until September 2017.

On 25 September 2017, numerous media outlets reported that the group disbanded. Reports about a breakup surfaced after Peter reportedly sent a termination letter to the group’s lawyer. Prior to this report, the duo disbanded in 2016, supposedly over a disagreement about the role of their manager.

10. Runtown – Mad Over You

Over 98 million views

This here is the one song that propelled Runtown internationally. Back in 2017, this song was the most popular song in Nigeria. The song currently has a staggering 98 million views on Youtube.

Runtown was born on 19 August 1989 in Enugu but grew up partly in Abuja and Lagos, where he finished his primary education.

In 2014 he released “Gallardo”, a song which features vocals from Davido and was released as the first single off his debut studio album Ghetto University.

Gallardo went on to win “Best Collaboration of the Year” at the 2014 edition of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

On 23 November 2015, Runtown released his debut studio album titled Ghetto University via MTN Music Plus through Eric Many Entertainment. The album generated over ₦35million on the music portal thus earning him a spot in the list of “Top 5 Most Streamed Artist”.

Over 99 million views

Banana brain was the first video from their album ‘Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid, the video was released on August 31, 2016 and since then has accumulated over 90 million views as of January 2020.

8. Yemi Alade– Johnny (Nigeria)

Over 111 million views

Yemi made her debut in the music scene in 2009, but it was until 2013 that she released this song and everyone was just blown away. The hit song ‘Johnny’ currently holds YouTube record of the most watched African Female (secular) video of all time And the fourth most watched Nigerian music video of all time.

Yemi Alade’s debut studio album King of Queens was released on October 2, 2014, by Effyzzie Music Group.

The deluxe edition of King of Queens was released in November 2014, and contains French versions of songs originally performed in English.

Alade’s second studio album Mama Africa was released on March 25, 2016, by Effyzzie Music Group. The album is the follow-up to her debut studio album King of Queens (2014).

Yemi Alade announced that proceeds from the sale of the album will go to the Feed a Child charity initiative. The deluxe edition of the album was released on April 6, 2016, and features guest vocals from South African musicians Bucie and AKA.

In July 2019, Alade was featured on “Don’t Jealous Me”, a track from Beyoncé’s compilation album The Lion King: The Gift. She appeared on the track alongside Mr Eazi and Tekno. Rolling Stone magazine revealed that Alade also recorded a verse for an earlier version of “My Power” in June.

Tekno Miles was first signed under K-Money Entertainment. His first single titled “Holiday” was released under the imprint. With featured vocals from Davido, “Holiday” was positively accepted and gained massive airplay.

In 2013, after he signed a recording contract with Made Men Music Group, he released singles like “Dance” and “Anything” which won him a nomination in the “Best New act of the Year” category at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

In 2015, Tekno Miles released his hit single titled “Duro” which was positively received both in Africa and in the USA.

In July 2019, Tekno was featured on “Don’t Jealous Me”, a track from Beyoncé’s compilation album The Lion King: The Gift, alongside Yemi Alade and Mr Eazi.

6. Sinachi – Way Maker (Nigeria)

Over 137 million views

Sinach, is a Nigerian-born gospel music singer, songwriter, and senior worship leader at Loveworld. Her song, “Way Maker”, is her most popular song till date judging from its views. Way maker video was directed by Ose Iria.

In 2017, she was inducted into the Bethlehem Hall of Fame, joining Dwayne Johnson, Pope Benedict XVI and a host of other internationally recognized celebrities on the listed.

Over 146 million views

Die Antwoord is a South African hip hop group formed in Cape Town in 2008. The group comprises of rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser and producer God. Their song ‘i fink u freeky’ was released in 2012 and currently is the most watched south african music video on Youtube, with over 146 million views on youtube.

4. Davido – Fall (Nigeria)

Over 153 million views

This song here was the one song that propelled Davido internationally. The song currently has a whopping 153 million views on youtube and is Davido’s most viewed video ever on youtube, and also the most viewed Nigerian Music Video on YouTube.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Lagos, Davido made his music debut as a member of the music group KB International.

He studied business administration at Oakwood University before dropping out to make beats and record vocal references.

Davido rose to fame in 2011 with the release of “Dami Duro”, the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo (2012).

The album also contained six additional singles: “Back When”, “Ekuro”, “Overseas”, “All of You”, “Gbon Gbon”, and “Feel Alright”.

Between 2013 and 2015, he released the hit singles “Gobe”, “One of a Kind”, “Skelewu”, “Aye”, “Tchelete (Goodlife)” featuring Mafikizolo, “Naughty” featuring DJ Arafat, “Owo Ni Koko”, “The Sound” and “The Money” featuring Olamide.

In January 2016, Davido announced on Twitter that he signed a record deal with Sony Music.

Few months after signing with Sony, Davido founded the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) record label. Dremo and Mayorkun are currently signed to the label.

In 2017 after he restructured his contract with Sony, Davido released five singles, including “If” and “Fall”. The former generated worldwide social media activity, while the latter became the longest-charting Nigerian pop song in Billboard history.

His most recent project “Blow my Mind”, features American pop-star Chris Brown.

Magic System’s recordings in the Zouglou dance style have featured in the charts throughout Africa (selling over 1.5 million CDs), the West Indies, and in France, where the band became one of the most popular modern African artists.
