With Internet penetration expanding steadily across Africa, video streaming platforms, such as YouTube etc, are becoming an increasingly important medium for sharing, enjoying and appreciating African music.
Below are the top 10 latest most watched African music videos on YouTube.

10. Davido – If

Over 93 Million views

With a record view of over 87 million views, IF by Davido can be said to be one of his best songs so far. This song was so hot R-kelly just couldn’t resist jumping on it.

9. Psquare – Personally (Nigeria)

Over 93 million views

With a record 93 million views and counting, “ Personally ,” the 2014 hit song by the now defunct music duo of Nigerian celebrity twins Peter and Paul Okoye is the 9th most watched African music video on YouTube.

P-Square used to be a Nigerian R&B duo of identical twin brothers Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye. They produced and released their albums through Square Records. In December 2011, they signed a record deal with Akon’s Konvict Muzik label. In May 2012, they signed a record distribution deal with Universal Music’s South African branch. On 25 September 2017, numerous media outlets reported that the group disbanded. Reports about a breakup surfaced after Peter reportedly sent a termination letter to the group’s lawyer. Prior to this report, the duo disbanded in 2016, supposedly over a disagreement about the role of their manager.

8. Runtown – Mad Over You

Over 95 million views

This here is the one song that propelled Runtown internationally. Back in 2017, this song was the most popular song in Nigeria. The song currently has a staggering 95 million views on Youtube.

Runtown was born on 19 August 1989 in Enugu but grew up partly in Abuja and Lagos, where he finished his primary education.

In 2014 he released “Gallardo”, a song which features vocals from Davido and was released as the first single off his debut studio album Ghetto University. Gallardo went on to win “Best Collaboration of the Year” at the 2014 edition of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. On 23 November 2015, Runtown released his debut studio album titled Ghetto University via MTN Music Plus through Eric Many Entertainment. The album generated over ₦35million on the music portal thus earning him a spot in the list of “Top 5 Most Streamed Artist”.

On 4 November 2016, Runtown released the ballad “Mad Over You”, which charted at number 38 on the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart. Joey Akan from Pulse Nigeria described the song as a “self-produced track that draws inspiration from the Ghanaian Alkayida sound”. Runtown told ‘The Fader magazine that the song was inspired by African beauty.

7. Yemi Alade– Johnny (Nigeria)

Over 109 million views

Yemi made her debut in the music scene in 2009, but it was until 2013 that she released this song and everyone was just blown away. The hit song ‘Johnny’ currently holds YouTube record of the most watched African female video of all time And the third most watched Nigerian music video of all time.

Yemi Alade’s debut studio album King of Queens was released on October 2, 2014, by Effyzzie Music Group. Alade collaborated with producers such as Selebobo, Sizzle Pro, Shady Bizniz, Philkeyz, Young D, Mr Chidoo, Fliptyce, EL Mcee and Beat Nation. The album was preceded by three singles: “Johnny”, “Tangerine” and “Kissing”. It features guest appearances and skits from Bovi, Chidinma, DIL, Selebobo and Diamond Platnumz. Alade promoted the album by touring several African countries, including Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. The deluxe edition of King of Queens was released in November 2014, and contains French versions of songs originally performed in English. Its cover art was unveiled on 21 October 2014. According to the music platform A Nation of Billions, King of Queens sold over 100,000 copies.

Alade’s second studio album Mama Africa was released on March 25, 2016, by Effyzzie Music Group. The album is the follow-up to her debut studio album King of Queens (2014). It features guest appearances from P-Square, Sarkodie, Sauti Sol, Flavour N’abania, Rotimi Keys, DJ Arafat and Selebobo. The album was produced by GospelOnDeBeatz, DJ Coublon, Selebobo, Philkeyz, BeatsByEmzo, Masterkraft, Rotimi Keys and Mr. Chidoo. It was supported by six singles: “Na Gode”, “Do As I Do”, “Ferrari”, “Kom Kom”, “Africa” and “Tumbum”. Mama Africa was made available for pre-order on iTunes a week before its official release. Yemi Alade announced that proceeds from the sale of the album will go to the Feed a Child charity initiative. The deluxe edition of the album was released on April 6, 2016, and features guest vocals from South African musicians Bucie and AKA.

In July 2019, Alade was featured on “Don’t Jealous Me”, a track from Beyoncé’s compilation album The Lion King: The Gift. She appeared on the track alongside Mr Eazi and Tekno. Rolling Stone magazine revealed that Alade also recorded a verse for an earlier version of “My Power” in June.

6. Tekno – Pana (Nigeria)

Over 111 million views

Undoubtedly the greatest song of tekno’s career.
Pana is the third most viewed Nigerian music video on youtube and the seventh most viewed African music video in YouTube.

Tekno Miles was first signed under K-Money Entertainment. His first single titled “Holiday” was released under the imprint. With featured vocals from Davido, “Holiday” was positively accepted and gained massive airplay.

In 2012 while in Abuja, Tekno Miles was spotted by renowned Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu at an event after Tekno Miles received a standing ovation following the performance of a song titled “Onye Ne Kwu”, his remix of Ice Prince’s “Oleku”. It was at the same event he met Iyanya and Ubi Franklyn, the manager of Made Men Music Group who he became friends with. Ubi and Iyanya eventually encouraged Tekno Miles to move to Lagos to further his music career.

On October 5, 2013, he signed a recording contract with Made Men Music Group under which he released singles like “Dance” and “Anything” which won him a nomination in the “Best New act of the Year” category at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. On June 18, 2015, Tekno Miles released his hit single titled “Duro” which was positively received both in Africa and in the USA. The  remix which featured Phyno and Flavour N’abania was released on November 16, 2015. “Duro” was produced by DJ Coublon. It topped several charts in Nigeria and on the international scene, it peaked at #5 on Capital XTRA’s “Afrobeats Chart: Top 10” for September 2015. On November 20, 2015, Tekno Miles released a single titled “Wash”. The song was produced by DJ Coublon with the video directed by AJE Filmworks.

In July 2019, Tekno was featured on “Don’t Jealous Me”,  a track from Beyoncé’s compilation album The Lion King: The Gift, alongside Yemi Alade and Mr Eazi.

5. Davido – Fall (Nigeria)

Over 148 million views

This song here was the one song that propelled Davido internationally. The song currently has a whopping 148 million views on youtube and is Davido’s most viewed video ever on youtube, and also the most viewed Nigerian Music Video on YouTube.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Lagos, Davido made his music debut as a member of the music group KB International. He studied business administration at Oakwood University before dropping out to make beats and record vocal references. Davido rose to fame in 2011 with the release of “Dami Duro”, the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo (2012). The album also contains six additional singles: “Back When”, “Ekuro”, “Overseas”, “All of You”, “Gbon Gbon”, and “Feel Alright”. In 2012, Davido won The Headies Award for Next Rated. Between 2013 and 2015, he released the hit singles “Gobe”, “One of a Kind”, “Skelewu”, “Aye”, “Tchelete (Goodlife)” featuring Mafikizolo, “Naughty” featuring DJ Arafat, “Owo Ni Koko”, “The Sound” and “The Money” featuring Olamide.

In January 2016, Davido announced on Twitter that he signed a record deal with Sony Music. His announcement was met with mixed reactions. The record label put out a press release to confirm the deal. Few months after signing with Sony, Davido founded the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) record label. Dremo and Mayorkun are currently signed to the label. In July 2016, Davido signed a record deal with Sony’s RCA Records. He released the 5-track EP Son of Mercy in October 2016, supported by the singles “Gbagbe Oshi”, “How Long” and “Coolest Kid in Africa”. The EP features guest appearances from Simi, Tinashe and Nasty C. Davido revealed to Pulse Nigeria in April 2017 that he renegotiated his contract with Sony due to creative control issues. He released five singles in 2017 after restructuring his contract, including “If” and “Fall”. The former generated worldwide social media activity, while the latter became the longest-charting Nigerian pop song in Billboard history.

Their song ‘i fink u freeky’ was released in 2012 and currently is the most watched south african music video on Youtube, with over 144 million views on youtube.

3. ‘Ugly Boy’ – Die Antwoord (South Africa)

Over 152 million views

Ugly Boy by Antwood is the second most viewed South African music video on Youtube and the second most viewed African music video on youtube with over 148 million views.

Baby on fire by antwoord is the most viewed South African music video on Youtube and the second most viewed African music video on youtube with a total of 231 million views. The video was Directed by NINJA and Terence Neale.

Die Antwoord is a South African hip hop group formed in Cape Town in 2008. The group is composed of rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser. Their image revolves around the South African counterculture movement known as zef.

In 2009, Die Antwoord released their debut album $O$ for free online and attracted international attention for their music video “Enter the Ninja”. After briefly signing with Interscope Records, in 2011 they founded their own label, Zef Recordz, and released their second and third studio albums: Ten$Ion (2012) and Donker Mag (“Dark Power”; 2014). In 2016, they released their fourth album Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid.

Magic System is an Ivorian musical group from Abidjan. It was founded in 1996 and comprises Salif “Asalfo” Traoré, Narcisse “Goude” Sadoua, Étienne “Tino” Boué Bi, and Adama “Manadja” Fanny.

Magic System’s recordings in the Zouglou dance style have featured in the charts throughout Africa (selling over 1.5 million CDs), the West Indies, and in France, where the band became one of the most popular modern African artists.
