Human Development Index (HDI) is a standard way of measuring the well-being of the people of a country.

It is a comparative measure of literacy, life expectancy and standard of living. HDI is used to measure the impact of the economic policies on the quality of life of its people.

The report was first launched in 1990 by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq and Indian Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Its goal was to place people at the center of the development process in terms of economic debate, policy and advocacy.

The Human Development Index (HDI) is used to rank countries according to their development levels from “very high” to “low”. Countries are ranked based on life expectancy, education, standard of living, child welfare, health care, economic welfare, and population happiness. Formulas are used to factor all the variables and determine the scores of countries.

Here is a brief overview of the Top 10 most developed African countries according to the last HDI report.

10. Cabo Verde (HDI Score: 0.648)

Cape Verde is often praised as an example among African nations for its stability and developmental growth despite its lack of natural resources.

9. South Africa (HDI Score: 0.666)

South African government till date is struggling to achieve monetary and fiscal discipline in order to ensure economic growth and redistribution of wealth.

8. Egypt (HDI Score: 0.691)

Egypt is taking steps to reduce poverty. It is targeting subsidies to the needy segments of the society. It is also working on bolstering its social justice agenda.

7. Gabon (HDI Score: 0.697)

This resource-rich nation is the fifth largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa. Gabon’s HDI has improved in the recent years all thanks to a working government.

6. Botswana (HDI Score: 0.698)

Botswana’s economic progress over the last four decades has transformed the living standards of its people. However, significant pockets of poverty still remain in rural areas and some parts of urban areas.

5. Libya (HDI Score: 0.716)

Libya had the highest Human Development Index of any country on the continent. but everything changed when the USNATO and “rebels” began their murderous and destructive attacks on the Libyans and their government. Now they are thw fufth in Africa

4. Tunisia (HDI Score: 0.725)

With a Human Development Index (HDI) estimated at 0.725,Algeria is classified by the UN agency among the 56 countries with as “high” human development country.

3. Algeria (HDI Score: 0.745)

Algeria is the largest country in Africa. And is ranked 3rd on the list of most developed countries in Africa

2. Mauritius (HDI Score: 0.781)

Mauritius has benefited immensely by sound macroeconomic policies and wide-ranging structural reforms since 2006. The nation is also one of Africa’s richest countries despite its small size and has been ranked among the top 10 countries in Africa with the most Millionaires.

1. Seychelles (HDI Score: 0.782)

Seychelles is right at the top of the list. The nation has met most of the Millennium Development Goals. The country has very good infrastructure. It has six airports with paved runways and eight airports with unpaved runways. The Seychelles is also the richest country in Africa.
