Netflix’s Africa agenda is off to a roaring start. Earlier this year, the streaming platform broadcasted plans to order more content, original or otherwise, from Africa, and it looks like they’re making good on that promise.

After the critical success of Beast of No Nation, Netflix acquired Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, and its first African animated series, Mama K’s Team 4.

Looks like they’re not stopping there. At the French-Nigerian Cinema Days, which held from July 2-3 in Lagos, award-winning Nigerian director and producer, Kunle Afolayan, revealed that Netflix has acquired the rights to his acclaimed movie, Mokalik:

“We are excited about having our film ‘Mokalik’ on Netflix, as that will assuage our fans who have been sending messages from all over the world, complaining of not having access to our films,” he said.

Mokalik follows a day in the life of 11-year-old Jaiye, who is sent by his parents to work at a mechanic workshop — in order to give him a different perspective on life. Singer-songwriter, Simi makes her acting debut as the daughter of a buka owner, whom Jaiye develops a crush on.

Featuring Femi Adebayo, Fathia Williams, Samuel Oludayo Akinpelu, Abdulateef Adedimeji, Charles Okocha, Samuel Ajibola, Wale Akorede, Simisola Ogunleye, Tobi Bakre, and Wale Akorede, ‘Mokalik’ is set in an automobile repair workshop (mechanic village).

There is no set date yet for when Mokalik will be released on Netflix.
